At two years of age, the song Adoro, by Armando Manzanero, was the first song she learned. Her mother, happy with Yucatecan singer’s music, played his pieces on the piano.
When Julia Vari, a Mexican singer and pianist, told her mother that she would make a jazz record in which the composer’s pieces would be included, she said: That can’t be done.
But she changed her mind when she confessed that she would do two duets with the author of Esta tarde vi llover.
Vari will perform on June 27, at the Lunario of the National Auditorium, Adoro, her third album, “fresh proposal, with jazz arrangements to songs that are already known in our country, such as Contigo aprendí, Media vuelta, Un mundo raro o Voy a apagar la luz; all, with a new melodic version.
It is a compilation of 10 songs authored by legends such as José Alfredo Jiménez and Armando Manzanero.
In an interview, Julia Vari says it is a tribute to these Mexican composers.
Her previous album, Lumea: songs from the world of jazz, was placed in the first five places of sale of the main music stores in Mexico. On that disc, Julia sings in seven languages.
The singer says that she convinced Manzanero to give her two songs, because “he liked the fusion of genres she did”.
“The contact was made through the son of José Alfredo Jiménez, whom I told that I was going to make the record. He insisted that I do a duet with Master Manzanero; He gave him my previous album, he liked it… We recorded Adoroand he liked the arrangement. Then he asked me to record another one, which was Por debajo de la mesa. ”
Vari says that on the second day of recordings the legend gave her ideas to do something together on stage.
The singer says that the link between jazz and the music of Manzanero lends itself to make these arrangements. It is very fine music. However, José Alfredo’s was a challenge, because it is more popular, more passionate, and has fewer chords, which makes it more difficult.
The singer intends to refresh those pieces with this album, and hopes that when they sing them, people won’t recognize them until they hear the lyrics.
She asks to be accompanied on that evening in Lunario, because what is lived on stage is different from the album. Go listen to lifelong songs with a different touch.
In her musical performance, she will be accompanied by extraordinary musicians, such as Álex Mercado, Agustín Bernal, Gabriel Puentes, among others.
